Consider your everyday dairy use and ‘who’ it is that brings it to you. It starts with the dairy cow and her suffering and if you don’t want to be a part of that you can choose plant based alternatives to cow’s milk. From a health perspective it is better for you and will reduce the suffering of dairy cows.

My favourite midnight drink used to be cold milk. Then I read about and witnessed the suffering of dairy cows and their calves. The bellowing and intense distress made me re-look at my habits and experiment with plant based alternatives. As awareness grows around the impact of food consumption, plant-based milks such as oat, almond, macadamia, and soy are gaining popularity among South Africans seeking healthier options. These dairy-free alternatives are naturally lactose-free and generally carry a lighter environmental footprint compared to conventional dairy production.

Choosing plant-based milk helps reduce pressure on natural resources, lower greenhouse gas emissions and decrease reliance on intensive dairy farming systems. It also tastes delicious and can be used to make the bechamel sauce so needed in certain white sauce that traditionally requires milk.

FOUR PAWS highlights that industrial dairy production raises serious animal welfare concerns, including the separation of calves from their mothers, cruel management practices and high-production environments. Reducing demand for dairy is a key step towards a more humane food system.

“Reducing dairy consumption is not only beneficial for personal health, but it also helps spare animals from intensive farming conditions and lowers our environmental footprint,” says Fiona Miles, Director of FOUR PAWS South Africa.

It is worth trying and the range of plant based milks available now will make it a whole lot easier to make simple, conscious swaps that are great in tea, coffee, cereal or cooking. Even small changes in daily habits can collectively make a significant difference for animals, the environment and public health.
