If you thought national security was only about borders, armies, and cyber threats, think again. In January 2026, the UK government released something extraordinary: a national security assessment declaring that global ecosystem degradation and collapse threaten national security and prosperity. Not “might threaten” or “could potentially impact.” Threatens. Present tense. Happening now.

For those of us living in South Africa’s Western Cape, this isn’t an abstract warning from across the ocean. It’s the smoke we’ve been breathing. It’s the charred fynbos stretching for tens of thousands of hectares. It’s the firefighters who’ve spent weeks battling blazes that seem to emerge faster than they can be contained.

Let me connect some dots that might seem unrelated at first glance.

The Fires That Won’t Stop

Over the past few months, the Western Cape has been burning. And not just small, containable incidents—we’re talking about fires of devastating scale and persistence:

The Cederberg (December 2024-January 2025): The blaze that began near Algeria burned for twelve days, scorching approximately 50,000 to 53,000 hectares of rugged fynbos landscape—an area roughly equivalent to 50,000 international rugby fields. Popular CapeNature campsites and hiking areas were cleared of guests. The Rocklands bouldering area, internationally famous among climbers, was severely affected. In early February 2026, CapeNature launched an extensive recovery programme with 6-12 months set aside to restore popular campsites and forests in the Cederberg Wilderness Area.

Pearly Beach and Stanford (January 2026): The Pearly Beach fire scorched more than 33,000 hectares, while the Stanford fire affected just over 4,000 hectares across the Overstrand region. Communities evacuated. Roads closed. Estimated costs between R6 to R7 million for firefighting alone. It took six days of aerial and ground firefighting bombardment to bring them under control—described as “one of the biggest firefighting operations that the Overstrand has experienced.”

Franschhoek/Cape Winelands (January 2026): Approximately 17,000 hectares burned, destroying two properties and affecting wine estates with smoke taint and property loss.

Bredasdorp (November 2025 and January 2026): More than 1,500 hectares burned in November, with a fire truck rolling down an embankment and injuring two firefighters during response efforts. Another major fire in January required road closures.

Riviersonderend (January 2026): A fire that jumped from Greyton across the road to Riviersonderend, burning in the mountains.

In total, at least ten major wildfires scorched approximately 90,000 hectares across the province over the past few months. The Western Cape government spent around R15 million on aerial firefighting support alone. These aren’t isolated incidents. They’re symptoms of something much larger.

What the UK Assessment Tells Us

The UK’s national security report, quietly published in January 2026 with little fanfare or ministerial comment, lays out what scientists have been warning about for years with a new urgency: we’re not just losing species and habitats. We’re losing the foundational systems that keep human civilization functioning.

Here’s what jumped out:

Wildlife populations have declined by 73% between 1970-2020. Think about that. In the span of a single human lifetime, nearly three-quarters of monitored global wildlife populations have declined.

Every critical ecosystem is on a pathway to collapse—from the Amazon rainforest to the Congo Basin, from coral reefs to boreal forests. And here’s the kicker: there is a realistic possibility that some ecosystems could start to collapse by 2030. That’s just four years away.

The report uses language we usually reserve for war and terrorism: cascading risks, geopolitical competition, migration crises, conflict.

Why? Because when ecosystems fail, everything else falls apart.

The assessment identifies six ecosystems of strategic importance to the UK, noting that their severe degradation or collapse would:

  • Displace millions of people
  • Alter global weather patterns
  • Intensify global food and water scarcity
  • Fuel geopolitical competition for remaining resources

South Africa’s Biodiversity at the Breaking Point

While the UK report focuses on global threats, South Africa faces its own crisis on multiple fronts. Our newly launched National Biodiversity Assessment 2025 (launched December 9, 2025, by Deputy Minister Bernice Swarts) paints a sobering picture:

Continued wetland loss and degradation, cumulative effects of energy infrastructure, climate change, and pressures from land-use change are hammering our ecosystems. Declines in waterbirds and the poor status of many native freshwater fishes underscore the deteriorating condition of freshwater and estuarine systems. Freshwater fishes, sharks and rays, and succulent plants are identified as the most threatened taxonomic groups in South Africa.

But here’s what recent research reveals about Africa more broadly:

Sub-Saharan Africa has lost 24% of its biodiversity since pre-industrial times. A major African-led study published in Nature in December 2025, co-produced by 200 experts, found that large mammals have declined the most—with some species like elephants, lions, and certain antelope losing more than 75% of their historical abundance.

African wildlife has lost over a third of its “ecological power.” Another Oxford-led study published in October 2025 found that Africa’s ecosystems are running on less than two-thirds of the natural energy they once had. This “ecological power”—the energy that drives vital ecosystem functions such as nutrient cycling, seed dispersal, and pest control—has fallen by more than one-third since pre-colonial times, largely due to the decline of large-bodied species like elephants, rhinos, and lions.

We’re not just losing species. We’re losing the functional capacity of our ecosystems to do the work that keeps us alive.

The Fynbos Under Fire

Here’s where it gets personal for us in the Western Cape. The Cape Floristic Region—our fynbos—is one of only three biodiversity hotspots in South Africa and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This isn’t just scenery. It’s one of Earth’s most diverse plant kingdoms, adapted over millennia to a very specific climate and fire regime.

Natural fires in fynbos are part of the ecosystem. But what we’re seeing now isn’t natural.

The fires burning through the Cederberg, through Stanford and Pearly Beach, through areas that protect our water sources—these are happening with greater frequency and intensity than the ecosystem evolved to handle. The Algeria fire in 2021 destroyed about 6,000 hectares of fynbos that had been burnt only eight years earlier, described by CapeNature as an “ecological disaster” because some fynbos species like proteas don’t reach reproductive maturity until 12 or even 15 years old.

When you burn young fynbos before it can seed, you’re not just damaging an ecosystem. You’re erasing it.

The Water Connection

Remember the Riviersonderend fire? That river isn’t just any waterway. As conservation efforts have documented, the Riviersonderend River feeds Theewaterskloof Dam—Cape Town’s largest water reservoir, holding 40% of the city’s water supply. It’s a strategic water source area.

The UK report warns that ecosystem collapse drives water insecurity. We don’t need to imagine that scenario. We lived through Day Zero. We know what happens when our natural water systems are stressed.

Every fire that rips through these watersheds, every invasive alien plant that sucks water before it reaches the rivers, every degraded wetland—these aren’t environmental issues separate from human survival. They’re threats to our most basic security: access to clean water.

What Ecosystem Collapse Actually Means

The UK assessment uses technical language about “tipping points” and “irreversible change.” Let me translate what that means in practical terms:

When an ecosystem collapses, it doesn’t just get worse—it transforms into something completely different. The Amazon becoming savannah. Coral reefs becoming dead rock. Productive farmland becoming desert.

For the fynbos, it means unique plants found nowhere else on Earth simply ceasing to exist. It means pollinators disappearing. It means water cycles disrupted. It means hillsides that can no longer hold soil during rains, leading to flooding and erosion.

And here’s the cascading part: migration will rise as development gains reverse and more people are pushed into poverty and food insecurity; geopolitical competition will increase as countries compete for scarce resources including arable land and water; conflict and military escalation will become more likely within and between states.

This isn’t science fiction. This is what the UK government—not typically given to environmental alarmism—now classifies as a national security threat in its official intelligence assessment framework.

Fire as a Symptom

The fires raging across the Overberg aren’t the problem. They’re the symptom.

The problem is:

  • Climate change creating hotter, drier conditions and more extreme weather
  • Invasive alien plants like rooikrans creating dense, unnaturally flammable fuel loads
  • Degraded ecosystems that can’t bounce back from repeated burning
  • Under-resourced fire services stretched beyond capacity
  • Communities built in fire-prone areas without adequate protection

Notice how none of these causes are natural? This is what the UK report means when it says human activity is the driver.

Food production is the most significant cause of terrestrial biodiversity loss, but it’s not the only one. Urban expansion, infrastructure development, pollution, climate emissions—all compound to push ecosystems toward collapse.

What Can Actually Be Done?

The good news—and yes, there is some—is that we know what works. The UK report is clear: protecting and restoring ecosystems is easier, cheaper, and more reliable than technological fixes.

In our context, that means:

Clearing invasive aliens systematically and continuously—not as a once-off project but as permanent stewardship. Invasive alien plants consume 6.7% of South Africa’s national water runoff.

Protecting and restoring water source areas like the Cederberg and Riviersonderend catchments. CapeNature’s newly launched restoration project for the Cederberg is a step in the right direction, with teams already beginning restoration work in affected areas.

Supporting fire management that works with ecological fire cycles, not against them.

Funding conservation properly so it’s not constantly in crisis mode. The UK report notes that Natural England has seen its operational budget reduced year-on-year for two decades, even as biodiversity is formally recognised as a national security issue—a warning for our own conservation agencies.

Integrating biodiversity protection into all development decisions—not as an afterthought but as a foundational requirement. Consider it security investments.

The Choice We Face

South Africa’s National Biodiversity Assessment 2025 documents both our biodiversity crisis and pockets of conservation success. We haven’t passed the point of no return. But we’re getting closer.

Without major intervention to reverse the current trend, ecosystem degradation is highly likely to continue to 2050 and beyond.

We need to recognise that biodiversity loss, ecosystem degradation, and climate change aren’t separate issues from economic security, food security, water security, and national security.

They’re the foundation everything else rests on.

When that foundation crumbles—and the UK government is now saying it’s crumbling—no amount of economic growth or technological innovation can compensate. You can’t eat money. You can’t drink GDP. You can’t breathe stock portfolios.

The smoke we’re breathing in the Western Cape isn’t just from fires. It’s a signal—one we’d be foolish to keep ignoring.
