Campaign in Support of the Towards IPOS Initiative (International Panel for Ocean Sustainability). Sea Change Project to present the campaign “Mother Nature in the Boardroom” with a short film directed by Craig Foster

October 1, 2024,New York City, NY : As the world grapples with escalating biodiversity loss, Sea Change Project is launching a powerful campaign, “Mother Nature in the Boardroom,” to ignite global awareness and action. The campaign, centred around a moving short film, will be unveiled during the Climate Week NYC by acclaimed environmentalist Craig Foster and world-renowned conservationist Dr. Jane Goodall.

The four-minute film, Mother Nature in the Boardroom, explores the urgent need for decision-makers to place the planet at the heart of economic discussions. Featuring Craig Foster, known for My Octopus Teacher, and with a voiceover by Dr. Jane Goodall as Mother Nature, the film poses a thought-provoking challenge to leaders: Can humanity thrive without nurturing the natural world it depends on?

The film underscores how every organism, from the smallest to the largest, contributes to the delicate balance of our ecosystems. “Neglecting to invest in me, as the provider of your natural capital, is dangerous,” says Mother Nature in the film. “You cannot keep drawing down on me without getting into debt—a debt that threatens all life.”

Launching to the public on October 1, 2024, the film calls for widespread action to ensure that Mother Nature has a place in the boardroom, alongside corporate and political leaders making critical decisions. This campaign ties into the emerging concept of the International Panel for Ocean Sustainability (IPOS), which aims to support States in accelerating the sustainable management and conservation of the ocean through actionable pathways and inclusive stakeholder engagement.

“I ask all of you to see clean rivers as the veins in your bodies, oceans as the air that you breathe, and our beautiful landscapes as tapestries of hope.”

“How do you propose to have a sustainable economic plan without a real biodiversity plan? Neglecting to invest in me, as the provider of your natural capital is dangerous. You cannot keep drawing down on me without getting into debt — a debt that threatens all life.

About IPOS

The ocean’s sustainability is at risk, and urgent action is needed. The International Panel for Ocean Sustainability (IPOS) is an emerging concept aiming to support States to accelerate the implementation of their respective international commitments for the sustainable management and conservation of the ocean.

IPOS will address policymakers’ priority questions by providing actionable pathways and recommendations. These will be developed through inclusive involvement of stakeholders and the mobilisation of their diverse knowledge and adapted to the contextual priorities of States.

The project is currently being led by a European consortium “Towards IPOS”. Supported by the European Commission and several countries, the IPOS concept is evolving through broad consultations, with the goal of presenting a final concept at the UNOC-3 in June 2025 for consideration.
