Anyone who has used an exfoliator will attest to its benefits. Like moisturiser, it is an essential part of any skin care routine and the best way to achieve soft, silky skin. Unfortunately, good products made from good ingredients don’t always come cheap, but there are ways to achieve excellent results without spending a fortune. Like making your own sugar and salt body scrubs.
The internet is a vast resource of fabulous recipes with a variety of ingredients both common and exotic, but my favourites use everyday kitchen staples and are made in less than 10 minutes.
CITRUS SALT SCRUB
10 tablespoons sea salt
2 tablespoons olive, coconut, almond or grapeseed oil
Grated rind of one lemon
Juice of half a lemon
Place sea salt in a bowl, add oil and mix thoroughly. Add lemon rind. Add lemon juice. Decant into pretty jar.
VANILLA SUGAR SCRUB
Half a cup of brown sugar
Quarter cup of white sugar (or just use all brown)
Quarter cup of olive, coconut, almond or grapeseed oil
1 Tablespoon (depending on your preference) pure vanilla extract (a little pricey, but worth it – it smells delicious!)
Mix the sugars, add the oil and mix again. Add vanilla. Mix. Decant into pretty jar.
Another favourite is a coffee sugar scrub, which is a fantastic way to use up used coffee grounds. The recipe I currently use can be found at the Nature’s Home Spa blog.
Quick and easy. Try them yourself and enjoy super smooth skin in time for summer.
A few tips:
* Store in the fridge.
* Don’t make large quantities; it’s not meant to last for months, but a couple of weeks is fine.
* Don’t allow water to get into the scrub and use a spoon to transfer the scrub from the jar to your hand.
